Petachiah of Regensburg
German rabbi
Petachiah of Regensburg was a prominent German rabbi who lived during the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. Born in Regensburg, Bavaria, he later relocated to Prague, where he became an established figure in the Jewish community. As a rabbi, Petachiah was deeply invested in the study and practice of Judaism, and his travels took him to various regions in search of knowledge and experience.
Petachiah's extensive travels throughout Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and the Middle East are well-documented in his written accounts. He visited numerous countries, including Poland, Russia, Syria, Armenia, and Greece, gaining valuable insights into the cultures and communities he encountered. His travelogue, later published as Travels of Rabbi Petachia of Ratisbon, provides a unique perspective on the regions he visited during the late twelfth century. Although the published version of his work appears to be abridged, it remains an important historical record of his journeys and experiences.
