Jacob Milgrom
American rabbi and academic (1923–2010)
Jacob Milgrom was a distinguished American rabbi and academic, specializing in the field of Judaism. Born in 1923, he went on to become a prominent Jewish Bible scholar, making significant contributions to the understanding of cult and worship in biblical research. His work built upon the documentary hypothesis, but he offered a unique perspective by tracing a direct line of development from the Priestly Code to the Holiness Code, and onwards to the cultic innovations of Ezekiel and the Dead Sea sect.
Milgrom's scholarly output was prolific, and he is perhaps best known for his comprehensive commentaries on the Torah. Additionally, his research on the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Book of Ezekiel has been widely recognized. Through his extensive publications, Milgrom demonstrated a deep understanding of the evolution of Jewish law, from the biblical period to the Mishnah and Talmud. He passed away in 2010, leaving behind a legacy as a leading Conservative rabbi and biblical scholar.
