Jacob Frank
polsk rabbin
Jacob Frank was a prominent Polish-Jewish religious leader, born in 1726, who played a significant role in the Jewish community. He claimed to be the reincarnation of notable figures, including Sabbatai Zevi, a self-proclaimed messiah, and the biblical patriarch Jacob. Frank's teachings and doctrines, however, were deemed heretical by the Jewish religious authorities, leading to his excommunication and that of his followers.
Frank's teachings were centered around controversial concepts, including the deification of himself as part of a trinity and the idea of "purification through transgression." His sect's practices, which included the deliberate violation of Jewish moral laws, sparked significant scandal. The group was known to engage in ritualized orgies and incestuous acts, which Frank believed were necessary to hasten a messianic redemption. He preached that embracing sin and the "abyss" of immorality was a means to achieve spiritual redemption. Frank's life and teachings had a profound impact on the Jewish community, and he remained a figure of significance until his death in 1791, although the exact nature of his legacy remains complex and multifaceted.
