Israel ben Josef was a prominent figure in the Jewish community, excelling as a merchant, banker, and Talmudist. His life took a significant turn in 1519 when he relocated to Kraków, a move prompted by the expulsion of Jews from Regensburg, a city in Germany. This transition marked the beginning of his establishment in Kraków, where he would go on to play a crucial role in the community.
As a respected member of the community, Israel ben Josef made lasting contributions, most notably as the founder of the Remah Synagogue in Kazimierz, a district of Kraków. The synagogue, built in 1553 on land he owned, stands as a testament to his dedication to his faith and community. On a personal note, Israel ben Josef was also the father of Moses Isserles, highlighting his influence not only in the commercial and religious spheres but also within his family, shaping the next generation of Jewish scholars and leaders.
