Erhard Wechselmann

German opera singer

Erhard Wechselmann was a German opera singer, specifically a baritone, born in 1895 in Eastern Europe. He later migrated to The Hague, Netherlands, where he served as a chazan in the synagogue. In addition to his work as a singer, Wechselmann was also a vocal teacher, notably instructing Dutch Yiddish singer Lin Jaldati. Wechselmann's life intersected with Jaldati's in a significant way, as they collaborated on a concert together, alongside her husband Eberhard Rebling.

Wechselmann's life was tragically cut short during World War II. Although the exact location of his death is reported differently, with one source indicating Auschwitz concentration camp and another stating Sobibor, it is confirmed that he was a victim of the atrocities committed during this period, passing away in 1943. Lin Jaldati would later write about Wechselmann in her autobiography, co-authored with Eberhard Rebling, titled "Sag nie, du gehst den letzten Weg" (published in 1986), which was later translated into Dutch as "Lied van verzet" in 2024. Through Jaldati's writings, Wechselmann's legacy as a singer and teacher has been preserved.
