David Kaufmann

Austrian academic (1852–1899)

David Kaufmann was a Jewish-Austrian academic who made significant contributions to the field of literature. Born in Kojetín, Moravia, in 1852, Kaufmann's early life laid the foundation for his future scholarly pursuits. His educational journey began in 1861 when he enrolled in the gymnasium at Kroměříž, Moravia, where he spent six years immersed in studies.

Kaufmann's time at the gymnasium was marked by a deep exploration of biblical and Talmudic studies under the guidance of Jacob Brüll, the rabbi of Kojetín, and his son Nehemiah. This period of intense learning had a profound impact on Kaufmann's intellectual development, ultimately shaping his academic interests and expertise in literature. Kaufmann went on to become a prominent figure in Austrian academia, leaving a lasting legacy in the literary world until his passing in 1899.
